Australian earthquake - Burakin, WA

31 March 2002

An earthquake occurred at 5.16 a.m. (Perth time) on Sunday 31 March in the vicinity of Burakin, Western Australia. The quake measured 4.6 on the Richter scale.

Residents nearby in Kalannie and residents up to Perth felt the earthquake, but there have been no reports of damage. There has been one recorded aftershock since the event.

The epicentre is located roughly ten kilometres north-west of Burakin. This earthquake is the strongest since March 23rd of this year and the third this March with a magnitude greater than 4.

Geoscience Australia is the earthquake-monitoring agency of the Commonwealth Government.
