Seismic activity in Sutton area

6 December 2002

Geoscience Australia has recorded increased seismic activity in the Sutton area, about 20km north-east of Canberra, since Sunday 1 December.

Over the past four days there have been nine earthquakes with magnitudes ranging between 1.1 and 1.8 which have been felt by local residents.

Geoscience Australia has installed a dial-up seismometer instrument in Sutton to continue monitoring the situation.

Similar swarms of earthquakes occurred in the Sutton area in January and February this year, when the largest event had a magnitude of 2.5.

Earthquake details will appear at www.ga.gov.au
