Media ReleaseSort by Date Overseas EarthquakeFor immediate release, Monday 10 March 2003 An earthquake occurred last night in the Indonesian Tanimbar Islands region in the Banda Sea, and was felt by some residents of Darwin. At 20.36 UT (20.06 Local Time) an earthquake of magnitude 5.9 occurred approximately 600km north of Darwin. The event was relatively shallow and was therefore felt at large distances from the epicentre. Earthquakes of magnitude 5 or more are common in the Indonesian arc, occurring once a week on average. The last event of this magnitude in the region occurred 9 days ago in the Irian Jaya area. www.ga.gov.au
