Magnitude 4.3 earthquake hits region

The Bowral, Mittagong, Moss Vale region was shaken by an earthquake at approximately 9.20pm. The earthquake has been recorded by Geoscience Australia instruments at magnitude 4.3 on the Richter scale.

"We have had a lot of reports from people who either felt or heard the earthquake", Geoscience Australia's duty seismologist, Dr Mark Leonard said.

"Calls have come from as far as Mittagong, Wollongong, various suburbs of Sydney, Collector and Hackett in the ACT".

"Earthquakes of this size are usually felt up to 100 km from the epicentre, but do not generally cause any structural damage", he added.

"We're not sure how deep this earthquake was, so depending on its depth, minor damage to brick work could be detected but we would not expect any major structural damage".

"We won't know until tomorrow, when people have assessed their homes and buildings and may find slight structural damage, such as cracks in the wall of their homes or buildings".
