Media ReleaseSort by Date Magnitude 2.6 earthquake hits Snowy MountainsFor immediate release, Sunday 17th April 2003 A small earthquake occurred yesterday near Khancoban, in the Snowy Mountains area of New South Wales. At 06.51 UT (16.51 Local Time) an earthquake of magnitude 2.6 occurred approximately 400km southwest of Sydney. The event was relatively shallow and would be expected to be felt at a distance of up to around 20km from the epicentre. "Earthquakes of this magnitude are fairly common in the region, with one occurring every two years on average within a 50km radius of Khancoban. The last event of this magnitude in Khancoban occurred October 2001", says Dr Cvetan Sinadinovski, seismologist at Geoscience Australia. www.ga.gov.au
