Magnitude 7 earthquake shakes Indonesia

For immediate release, Tuesday 27th May 2003

An earthquake occurred this morning on the Indonesian island of Halmahera.

At 19.23 UT (02.23 Local Time) an earthquake of magnitude 7.0 occurred approximately 1500km north of Darwin. The event was relatively shallow and would be expected to be felt up to 1200km from the epicentre, with possible damage within around 100km.

There have been 8 earthquakes of magnitude 7 or more in the area, over the past 20 years. The last event of this magnitude in the area occurred in September 1998.
