Media ReleaseSort by Date Young rocked by earthquake boomFor immediate release, Thursday 29th May 2003 A small earthquake occurred last night in Young, New South Wales at 22.50pm local time (12.50 UT). The magnitude 2.6 earthquake was relatively shallow at 2km depth. It was felt and heard widely by local residents. "Residents as far away as 20km from the epicentre felt a jolt from the magnitude 2.6 earthquake," Andrew Owen, seismologist at Geoscience Australia said. "Even more people would have heard the earthquake boom which was described by residents as the sound of a jet engine", he added. Mr Owen said, "Earthquakes of this size are not uncommon in the area, with over 240 earthquakes occurring within a 100km radius over the last 50 years". www.ga.gov.au
