    Monday, 14 October 2002, 3pm
Bond Store, Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, 40 Macquarie St, Hobart, TAS 7000
  • Outline: The Rock which Makes Tasmania is an authoritative work based on nearly 40 years of research by David Leaman on the many aspects of the Jurassic dolerites of Tasmania. It summarises all that is known about these magnificent rocks which dominate the island of Tasmania. The "dolerite" locally known as bluestone or ironstone, occurs on such a scale as to present many structural and petrological faces. It is a multiply intruded family of rocks. The text outlines the history of study, the elements of contention and the resolution of the structural enigmas, chemical, engineering, hydrological and pedological problems which led to the description of the dolerite as "Tasmania's Curse. "

The chances are that you can see good examples of these -- and many variations of -- fossils in this display of Permian marine life from Tasmania
    – The Old Beach exhibit displays fossils --real and casts -- of some of the vertebrates, including fish and amphibians, which lived in southern Tasmania 240 million years ago, during the Triassic
