Earth Science Week—Mapping Our World

Earth science is all around us. Many of us barely notice it influencing our daily lives but once a year the topic is given a special place.

And once again Geoscience Australia will host part of Australia's Earth Science Week celebrations 13-19 October through activities aligned with the international theme, Mapping our World.

Earth Science Week is an international initiative to promote Earth sciences and to raise awareness of the contribution the various geoscience disciplines makes to the community. This year Earth Science week aims to engage young people and others in learning how geoscientists, geographers and other mapping professionals use maps to represent land formations, natural resource deposits, bodies of water, fault lines, volcanic activity, weather patterns, travel routes, parks, businesses, population distribution, our shared geologic heritage and more. Apart for the recognised and frequently used applications, maps also help to show how the Earth systems, such as geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere and biosphere, interact.

In the lead up to Earth Science Week, Geoscience Australia is hosting the Top GeoShot photographic competition.

The theme for this year's competition is Exposed to the Elements. Entries for the competition, which is open to all members of the public, will close on 23 September 2013. The aim of the competition is to obtain a collection of images that capture the essence of Earth science in Australia. Amateur photographers are especially encouraged to submit their photographs. This year's winner of Top GeoShot will be announced during Earth Science Week and will be on display in the foyer of the Geoscience Australia building.

Further information for Top GeoShot and Earth Science Week activities is available through Geoscience Australia's Education Centre.
