The Carpentaria Reefs: A New Coral Reef Province for Australia

This movie describes the main findings of two Geoscience Australia surveys to the Gulf of Carpentaria in 2003 (survey 238) and 2005 (survey 276). The story relates to the discovery of submerged coral reefs across the southern Gulf and how they were identified using new multibeam sonar technology. The age of the reefs was determined using drill-core samples collected from the reefs, and measured by the Uranium/Thorium method at the Australian National University. The submerged reefs in the Gulf were not known to exist prior to this study and their discovery adds a new coral reef province to be managed and protected as part of Australia's marine zone.

The bathymetric image is derived from multibeam sonar collected in 2008 and 2009 using a 300 kHz Simrad EM3002 system on RV Challenger and gridded at 3 - 4 m resolution. Key features on the shelf include low relief (< 5 m) reefs on the outer shelf of Freycinet Peninsula and inner shelf of Tasman Peninsula, high relief (50-90 m) reefs surrounding Hippolyte Rocks, and extensive fractured reefs around The Friars to the south of Bruny Island. All reefs provide hard substrate for kelp gardens and diverse sponge communities. The southeast Tasmanian shelf is a study site for the Marine Biodiversity Research Hub, funded through the Commonwealth Environment Research Facilities (CERF) programme. Survey work was carried out as a collaboration between Geoscience Australia and University of Tasmania (Institute for Marine & Antarctic Studies). Key features on the shelf include a prominent ridge at 60 m water depth and a complex area of smaller ridges and mounds across the inner shelf. The ridges and mounds provide hard substrate for diverse coral and sponge communities. The Carnarvon shelf is a study site for the Marine Biodiversity Research Hub, funded through the Commonwealth Environment Research Facilities (CERF) programme. The bathymetric image is derived from merged grids (8 m and 40 m resolution) that incorporates multibeam sonar collected in 2008 using a 30 kHz Simrad EM300 system on RV Southern Surveyor, legacy sonar data from various sources and satellite-derived bathymetry (grid development detailed in GA Record 2010/36). Key features on the shelf bathymetry include a drowned reef that encircles the island and intervening areas of sediment-covered basins.
