Help for the Cocos Islands Online GIS

The Cocos (Keeling) Islands GIS is a web based map system for exploring the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. The system allows you to zoom in and out, pan and select attributes of displayed layers.

For optimal performance please use a fast, modern web browser such as Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox when viewing the online map.

Note to Internet Explorer users: Internet Explorer 6 and 7 have severe performance issues when trying to use the map. For best results please download a more powerful browser such as those mentioned above.

Viewing layers

Click the layer control in the top right corner of the map to show the layers list.

You can cycle between the different imagery by clicking the radio buttons under 'Base Layer'.

You can overlay multiple vector layers onto the imagery by ticking the boxes under 'Overlays'.

Querying data

To display information about a particular feature of a vector layer, ensure that layer is ticked in the layer list, select the identify tool from the menu bar and click on the feature you wish to query.

You can use the navigation menu in the top left corner of the map to pan and zoom.

Use the tool to "grab" the map and drag it around.

Click the button to zoom closer to the map, or the button to zoom away. Alternatively you can use the scroll on your mouse to zoom in and out.

Using the tool you can zoom to an area by drawing a box around it on the map.

Clicking the button will zoom the map to the full extent, showing the whole island.

As new image tiles are generated each time you move or zoom the map, they may take a while to load. If the map displays incorrectly, or you receive an error message, refreshing the page should resolve the issue.

As noted above, because of performance issues with older version of Internet Explorer, it is highly recommended that you use a modern browser, such as Chrome or Mozilla Firefox.
