About OGRE

Background

Until the establishment of the Optical, Geospatial, Radar and Elevation (OGRE) data and services panel, Geoscience Australia was focused on the archiving and distribution of public good imagery. Through the OGRE Panel Geoscience Australia will archive and distribute commercial satellite imagery.

Commercial Earth Observation products and services are used by a large number of Government agencies for environmental, national security and compliance monitoring purposes.

Previously, purchases were not visible across agencies leading to duplication of purchases. The OGRE is a joint initiative of Geoscience Australia and the Defence Imagery and Geospatial Organisation (DIGO) to create a cooperative panel for government agencies to acquire imagery, related data and services.

OGRE Objectives

  • To develop a more coordinated, streamlined and cost-effective approach to purchasing of imagery within Australian governments through an active 'community of practice'
  • To provide access to imagery under appropriately flexible licence and copyright conditions, allowing for wide usage of data and imagery within all levels of government
  • To provide a framework for an Australian Government plan to obtain, house and archive imagery.

Panel Principles

The principles of the Optical, Geospatial, Radar and Elevation (OGRE) data and services panel are:

  • The OGRE must be transparent in all expenditure
  • Earth Observation data and services must have standard labelling and be as broadly accessible as possible to provide the best value for money development and planning
  • Cooperative approaches may incur short-term costs but return significantly more long-term value.

Feedback

If you would like to provide feedback in relation to the services provided through the OGRE or any other area of Geoscience Australia please review our service charter.
