Geologi Short Film Competition

The annual Geologi short flim competition is hosted by Geoscience Australia and the Australian Science Teachers Association to celebrate Earth Science Week. It is open to all Australian primary and secondary schools.

Future entrants

Information and tips about the Geologi10 competition will be published in February 2010. Any individual, class or group can enter a short film that relates to a different Earth science theme each year. There are three age divisions:

• Primary
• Years 7-10
• Years 11-12

Judging criteria

The judging panel consists of scientists and science teachers. Films are judged primarily on the accuracy and originality of the science theme and message. The following criteria are used to judge submitted films, with each criterion assessed out of 10.

• The film has a clear Earth science theme/message.
• The film contains significant and correct Earth science content relevant to the theme.
• The Earth science within the film is accurate.
• The film demonstrates originality/creativity/innovation in communicating the Earth science.
• The film is technically competent overall.

Filming tips

It's a good idea to write a script and shooting plan before you start.

Visual

• Use a tripod wherever possible to reduce camera shake and improve the quality of your footage.
• Get physically close to your subject; don't just rely on the zoom. This also will help to improve the sound quality.
• If you use the zoom function on your camera, zoom in slowly.
• Film more than just your subject. An example of this is to illustrate with the camera what the narrator is talking about.
• Ensure that your lighting is correct. Try to locate a light source above the subject.

Audio

• Be aware of your surroundings and reduce unwanted background noise and voices.
• Use a directional microphone instead of an omnidirectional microphone for sound.
