Background

The American Geological Institute organised the first Earth Science Week in October 1998. It now provides an opportunity for all those involved in Earth sciences around the world to present the results of their activities, and highlight the importance of their work to the community.

This special week allows geoscientists, teachers and parents to focus on helping students to explore the connections between their lives and the Earth.

Geoscience Australia has managed Australian celebrations of Earth Science Week since October 1999. That year was marked by the opening of our Education Centre, which caters specifically for school groups.
