Brisbane, a popular tourist destination, has the fastest growing population of the state capitals. Its sub-tropical climate has attracted people, especially retirees, from other states.
The city straddles the meandering Brisbane River. Hills limit development west of the city centre, and the coast and swamps limit expansion to the east.
Suburbs have developed along transport corridors: south-east towards the Gold Coast (a popular tourist destination), south-west to Ipswich and, to a lesser extent, towards the Sunshine Coast to the north of Brisbane.
Population: 1 520 600 (1996 Census)
