Hobart, Tasmania

Click here to see a larger Landsat 7 image of Hobart acquired by ACRES on 27 Sept 1999 Hobart lies on the banks of the Derwent River estuary, a broad, drowned river valley in the south of Tasmania. The main metropolitan area as a whole is hilly, but it is dominated by Mount Wellington, less that 10km west of the city centre. Snow falls on Mount Wellington and the adjacent highlands for a few days in most winters. Large areas of bushland still exist on the outskirts of Hobart.
Founded in 1804, Hobart is Australia's second oldest capital. Whilst whaling made Hobart an important port, its beautiful harbour is now the destination for the annual yachting races from Sydney and Melbourne. Hobart
