The satellite images on this page were produced initially to assist Australia's peace-keeping efforts in East Timor. The images show various towns in Timor shortly after the ballot for independence from Indonesia was held in East Timor on Monday 30 August 1999.
The satellite image mosaic of Timor (below) was produced using three images which were taken on 8, 15 and 17 September 1999 by the Landsat 7 satellite - 705km away in space.
