APS Innovation Week 2012
As part of APS Innovation Week (2 - 8 June), Geoscience Australia will be hosting several special public events to showcase some of the latest scientific innovations being used to help uncover Australia's hidden mineral wealth and monitor earthquakes. Innovation Week is about sharing new ideas, solutions and priorities to get better results and outcomes.
A World Wind tour of earthquakes and Australia's mineral resources
Come along to Geoscience Australia in Canberra to take part in a virtual 3D technology tour exploring some of Australia's key national geophysical and mineral datasets. This will be followed by a visit to the operations hub of the Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre. Three public tours will be offered at 10am, 12pm and 2pm on Tuesday 5 June, with numbers strictly limited to 20 visitors per tour.
On the tour, visitors will be introduced to Geoscience Australia's innovative open-source 3D Data Viewer, using it to explore some of Australia's seismic, geophysical and mineral datasets in three dimensions. Based on NASA's World Wind Java software, the viewer creates a 'virtual earth' environment to show national datasets, such as the Radiometric, Gravity and Magnetic Anomaly Maps of Australia, draped over a 3D terrain. Tour participants will also participate in the first public tests of a new interactive experience which uses motion sensors to control the viewer.
Following the 3D experience, visitors will be welcomed to the Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre, where seismic activity across the Asia Pacific region is closely monitored.

Searching the Deep Earth seminar
Geoscience Australia geophysicist Richard Chopping will also be presenting a public seminar on the topic of Searching the Deep Earth: uncovering Australia's hidden mineral wealth at 11am - 12pm on Wednesday 6 June. The seminar will explain the cutting-edge techniques being used to discover Australia's mineral resources, and explore some of the innovative high performance computing research being undertaken to help uncover Australia's hidden mineral wealth.
