Australian Solar Energy Information System Online
The Australian Solar Energy Information System Online (ASEISonline) is a Geoscience Australia product for supporting, improving and providing regional scale pre-competitive solar resource data to the Solar Power industry, researchers and the public. Working in close collaboration with the Bureau of Meteorology, we have almost doubled the Bureau’s solar ground station network, improved the modelling processes and the reprocessing of some 25 years of satellite modelling data held by the Bureau, and developed products providing innovative ways to access and use solar resource data. The work has been funded through the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA).
The product will foster and support regional solar analysis through three interacting areas:
- Increasing the number of the Bureau’s solar monitoring stations across Australia to gain a better picture of the resource across a wider range of environs.
- Improving solar exposure satellite models and apply these improved modelling techniques to the archive of satellite solar insolation data held by the Bureau.
- Improve the discoverability, access and understanding of solar resource data through an interactive web portal and products.
On 18 November 2010, Geoscience Australia (GA) and The Department for Resources, Energy and Tourism (RET) entered into a MOU for the provision of Spatial Information for Solar Resource Mapping relating to High Solar Prospectively Regions and Expansion of the Solar Observation Network.

This product contains some material provided by the Bureau of Meteorology. In respect of that part of the information which is sourced from the Bureau and to the maximum extent permitted by law:

Satellite derived solar global horizontal irradiance estimates are based on images from the Geostationary Meteorological Satellite GMS-5, Geostationary Operational Environment Satellite (GOES-9) and MTSAT-IR satellites which are provided with permission of the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) and the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Any use of products from this imagery requires acknowledgement of the satellites of JMA and NOAA as the original source of the satellite data, and acknowledgement of the Commonwealth of Australia (Bureau of Meteorology) which received and processed the images. Acknowledgement should be in the form:
"Solar radiation data derived from satellite imagery processed by the Bureau of Meteorology from the Geostationary Meteorological satellite and MTSAT series operated by Japan Meteorological Agency and from GOES9 operated by the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for the Japan Meteorological Agency"
