The Earth's magnetic field is used as a basis for navigation, surveying and mapping, mineral exploration, probing the Earth's crust and deep interior, and understanding solar-terrestrial relationships. Geoscience Australia maintains a national network of geomagnetic observatories, which are part of a global network. We also promote public safety through the provision of compass and magnetometer calibration information, and help mitigate the potential hazardous effects of magnetic storms on radio and satellite communications, radar, global positioning system (GPS), spacecraft, powerlines and pipelines.

Project Outcomes

Reduced risk of navigation (magnetic compass) errors, accurate directional drilling and direction finding, enhanced aeromagnetic exploration success, and a framework for solar-terrestrial physics research.

Project Outputs

Geomagnetic data, indices of activity, numerical field and secular-variation models and charts, advice and information for the Australian and Australian Antarctic Territory regions from the national magnetic observatory and repeat station network, for government, industry, science and data centres worldwide.
