Description

Abstract: This data set is a classification of the Australian continent into 2-dimensional surface regions. A geological region is a relatively large geographical area with a cohesive, albeit in some cases complex, geological assemblage (Bain and Draper 1997, AGSO Bulletin 240); significantly different in overall geology from the adjoining regions, and differs from geological province in that it does not include depth or time dimensions. NOTE: Specialised Geographic Information System (GIS) software is required to view this data.

Data quality

Lineage:
The original data was derived from the digital version of the 1978 BMR 1:2 500 000 Geological Map of Australia. The individual units were attributed with the contents of BMR Bulletin 181 (Palfreyman, 1984). Linework and each attribute was validated against current geoscientific knowledge and the preliminary (Geology (1:2,500,000) (National Geoscience Dataset) by Shaw, Yeates, Doutch, Palfreyman and Blake, 1998)

Positional accuracy:
Nominal Scale 1:5,000,000 Variable depending on the historic source of some data and on subjective generalisations made by the authors.

Attribute accuracy:
Attributes are based on geoscientific information, mainly BMR Bulletin 181 but also on source maps and in reports and research papers. As some information is the result of highly detailed recent mapping and some is taken from reconnaissance mapping several years old, attribute accuracy is highly variable.

Logical consistency:
The dataset is highly consistent. A geoscientist inspected the finished dataset to make sure it was consistent not only the accuracy and standards of the source data, but the newly incorporated geological information. The dataset has also been topologically tested to detect flaws in the spatial data structure using Arcinfo GIS software. The testing ensures the dataset has been corrected to make sure attributed polygons are closed, nodes are formed at the intersection of lines and that there is only one label within each polygon. This process is a part of the standard quality assurance/quality control process Geoscience Australia has in place for digital GIS data.

Completeness:
The dataset coverage is complete for the whole of continental Australia.
