Regolith Terrains of Australia (National Geoscience Dataset)Note : This dataset description is metadata (data about data) which describes the actual dataset in accordance with the ANZLIC (Australia New Zealand Land Information Council) Core Metadata Guidelines Version 2. Dataset citationANZLIC unique identifier: ANZCW0703002403Title: Regolith Terrains of Australia (National Geoscience Dataset) CustodianCustodian: Geoscience AustraliaJurisdiction: Australia DescriptionAbstract: Australia has been divided into 392 Regolith Terrain Units on the basis of dominant topography, geology and regolith. Full details available in BMR Record 1986/27 has been used to attribute this dataset. Ths data was compiled at 1:5 000 000 scale from regolith mapping work done by several authors. The accompanying 1:5 000 000 map was digitised in Arcinfo at NRIC in 1993. Polygon attributes were obtained from a selected digital version of the text Record 1986/27 at that time. In June 1998 the selected attributes of the Arcinfo dataset were reviewed and mostly discarded. New attribute data based on all the original Record 1986/27 data was compiled into a spreadsheet and compared to the regolith mapping codes used for the production of AGSO's current Regolith maps and stored in the corporate Regolith database RTMAP. Modification of some original data and the addition of classification attributes occurred on the tabular data before addition to the original Arcinfo coverage. Positional accuracy: Nominal Scale 1:5,000,000 Highly variable since the original map was digitised at 1:5,000,000 scale. Attribute accuracy: Variable due to regolith attributes being derived from mapping work done by a series of authors compiled into BMR Record 1986/27. However in reattaching the original attributes from hardcopy to the spatial dataset the attributes were reassessed against current regolith science mapping codes and authority tables and were modified and standardised with current information. Logical consistency: A geoscientist visually inspected the finished dataset to make sure the attributes were accurate and the data were consistent spatially with current scientific information. Tests are also carried out on these data for data completeness, correct spatial representation, attribute accuracy, logical consistency and correctness, and where appropriate for compliance with Geoscience Australia's GIS data dictionary. Completeness: The dataset coverage is complete for the whole of continental Australia.
