Description

Abstract: This dataset shows where Geoscience Australia has done deep seismic reflection traverses in Australia. It is generated from a database containing coordinates of all onshore seismic traverses recorded since 1964. Selected scanned seismic sections from most of the seismic surveys are also available with this dataset.

Data quality

Lineage:
Seismic station coordinates which are all surveyed points, to 3rd order surveying standard, are extracted from the database containing Geoscience Australia's onshore seismic traverses. This ASCII file data is used to create a line coverage in ArcInfo, adding the seismic line name coding, as well as feature and ufi (necessary QA/QC items). Selected scanned sections are also included with the dataset the names of which are hard coded into the coverage for hotlinking.

Positional accuracy:
Nominal Scale 1:10,000

Seismic station coordinates are all surveyed points, to 3rd order surveying standard and are extracted from a database so positional accuracy is high.

Attribute accuracy:
The only attribute currently assigned is the seismic line name which is stored in a database so accuracy is high.

Additional attributes will be added in the near future.

Logical consistency:
A geoscientist visually inspected the finished dataset to make sure attributes are accurate and the data were consistent spatially with current scientific information. Tests are also carried out on these data for data completeness, correct spatial representation, attribute accuracy, logical consistency and correctness, and where appropriate for compliance with Geoscience Australia's GIS data dictionary.

Completeness:
The dataset coverage is complete for the whole of continental Australia from 1976 to 2001. Earlier surveys will be added in the near future.
