DescriptionAbstract: The image is based on a preliminary version of depth to basement map compiled as part of AGSO marketing activities aimed at encouraging further exploration of Australian oil and gas reserves. The image highlights distribution and shape of Australian onshore and offshore sedimentary basins. For most of the mapped area the image reflects depth to the basement (onshore basins, eastern and southern margins). In the absence of depth to the basement data, the deepest horizon or the horizon reflecting rift-phase development of the basin has been mapped (North West shelf). ANZLIC search words and qualifiers:

Forty-four published/unpublished contour maps (1977-1994) were used in the compilation, at scales from 1:250 000 to1:2 000 000. Large-scale maps were generalised to the 1:5 000 000 scale. Contour maps were digitised using Petroseis. Before gridding, outcrops of crystalline basement and some Proterozoic basins (Nabberu, Bangemall, Hamersley, Kimberley) were outlined by zero contours. There were no data for the Wiso Basin. Petroseis contours were converted into an Arcinfo coverage and then into an Arcinfo grid. The Petroseis grid was exported in TIFF format and georeferenced in Arcinfo. The image was then projected into Lambert Conformal Conic projection.

Variable as the datasets come from a variety of sources at a variety of scales. To accurately determine the source information of data used in compilation as second dataset is stored (dtbase_contours_references) which indicates the bibliographic references of poligonal areas of the final contour dataset (dtbase_contours).
