Description

Abstract: The Gravity Survey Index presents a summary of the essential specifications on about 1000 gravity surveys held in the National Gravity Database. Gravity measurements have been made in Australia since about 1900. Organised surveys for geophysical purposes (initially oil and coal exploration) have been conducted from 1939 onwards. The dataset includes surveys carried out by AGSO (BMR), state governments, private companies, universities and other organisations. The digital point data, maps and grids derived from these surveys are available as separate products. Additional to the survey index is the locations of the the Australian fundamental gravity network stations as a separate dataset.

Data quality

Lineage:
Data is extracted from an ORACLE database and generated into spatial datasets using Arcinfo.

These are information datasets giving specifications of gravity surveys and fundamental gravity network stations held in the National Gravity Database. Original data come from statistical parameters generated by the previous in-house processing system from the point dataset and information extracted from the analogue hard-copy filing system.

Positional accuracy:
Nominal Scale 1: 250,000 As some of the data is historic and/or derived from hard copy information the positional accuracy should not be relied upon below the nominal scale.

Attribute accuracy:
Variable depending on the historic and hardcopy source of some information.

Logical consistency:
A geoscientist visually inspected the finished dataset to make sure the attributes were accurate and the data were consistent spatially with current scientific information. Tests are also carried out on these data for data completeness, correct spatial representation, attribute accuracy, logical consistency and correctness, and where appropriate for compliance with Geoscience Australia's GIS data dictionary.

Completeness:
Substantially complete, the database is being continually added to and as such periodic updates will contain more complete and newer information.
