Geoscience Australia GeoSciML Project (WMS and WFS Services)

Background

The GeoSciML project was initiated in 2003, under the auspices of the IUGS CGI (Commission for the Management and Application of Geoscience Information) Interoperability Working Group. Geoscience Australia has been a member of the Interoperability Working Group since 2005, and chairs the GeoSciML Data Model Design task group in 2009.

The web services described here were constructed as part of the GeoSciML Testbed #3, to test web services based on GeoSciML version 2.0 which was released in December 2008. Geological Surveys from the UK, France, Canada, Sweden, Italy, Victoria, Arizona and Japan took part in this Testbed. Some examples of their web services are available at:

The Geoscience Australia services deliver 1:2.5M and 1:1M scale geological map data for Australia - geological units, unit contacts, faults and shear zones - and a test dataset of field site (outcrop) descriptions. The outcrops service uses both the OGC Observations & Measurements schema and GeoSciML to deliver locations, geological descriptions, specimens, magnetic susceptibility, and structural measurements taken at outcrops in a field mapping survey.

The geological map web services of Geoscience Australia and many countries are also available through the OneGeology portal.

Web Map Service

1. 1:2.5M and 1:1M scale geological map WMS

A display scale limit is employed on the 1:1M scale data layers in this WMS. Users must zoom into at least 1:2M scale to be able to view the 1:1M scale layers. Geological unit layers are displayed in two colour schemes - one based on age, the other on lithostratigraphic classification

WMS GetCapabilities: http://www.ga.gov.au/wms/getmap?dataset=geows&service=wms&request=getcapabilities

2. Field sites (outcrops) WMS

WMS GetCapabilities: http://www.ga.gov.au/wms/getmap?dataset=geows_outcrops&service=wms&request=getcapabilities

A WMS GetFeatureInfo request on these WMS services will return a HTML-formatted response which contains a link query to the corresponding WFS service.

Web Feature Service

This WFS service is running.

Each dataset has its own base url:

Please note that while this WFS service delivers OGC-valid XML, it is not fully OGC compliant in its ability to honour all mandatory OGC requests. Examples of supported requests on this service are shown below:
