Australia faces an ongoing threat from natural and human-made hazards. Historically, bushfires have caused loss of life and significant damage to property. While naturally occuring bushfires cannot be averted, their consequences can be minimised by implementing mitigation strategies and reducing the potential impact to areas which are most vulnerable. Geoscience Australia is playing an important role in developing models, methods, information and tools to analyse natural hazard risk and impacts, assisting government and emergency managers to prepare for a range of possible events, enhancing mitigation and improving community resilience.
