Interview and selection process

All Geoscience Australia appointments and promotions are based exclusively on merit to ensure equal employment opportunities for all. If you are selected for interview, the selection committee will assess your suitability against the selection criteria for the position having regard to your application, psychometric assessment, interview and referee reports.

Please note: Geoscience Australia is covered by the Public Service Act 1999. This Act restricts the employment of non Australian citizens. If you are not an Australian or New Zealand Citizen, you are welcome to apply for the Graduate Program, but you will be considered only if no Australian or New Zealand Citizens are found to be suitable for the program.

Selection criteria

  1. A degree or completing a degree this year with Honours, Masters or PhD in one or more of the following disciplines: geology, geochemistry, geophysics, geomatics/geoinformatics/surveying and information management.
  2. Ability to exercise sound independent judgment and show initiative in an area of science relevant to Geoscience Australia’s program objectives.
  3. Evidence of personal motivation, flexibility, the seeking of new challenges and a commitment to achieving high quality results.
  4. Willingness and enthusiasm to perform scientific work in fields broader than that encompassed by your tertiary training.
  5. Demonstrated verbal & written communication skills.
  6. Interpersonal skills, in particular the ability to work as a member of a team both in the office and in a field environment.
  7. The capacity or potential to display leadership in a team environment.
  8. An understanding of the role and objectives of Geoscience Australia.
