Help/How to use the Burdekin-Fitzroy Interactive Map

The map page is best viewed at 800 x 600 (or greater) resolution, with at least 32768 colours. Some features require Javascript. The query tool, legend and metadata functions use popup windows. If your browser blocks popups please enable them for this site.

This mapping system allows the user to add a variety of themes, zoom in and out, pan, and select the attributes of displayed themes. Please note that some layers and labels have scale-dependent display (they only display between certain scales).

The mapping system starts with the coastline and study area layers turned on (these layers cannot be turned off). The user can add themes by selecting them from the menu at the left of the page.

Basic navigation is done using the 4 buttons above the map image (Holding the cursor over the icon displays the button function)

The checkboxes in the Table of Contents menu on the left turn on/off overlay layers (any number of overlays can be turned on at once). The drop-down list (select box) contains background layers (only one background layer can be turned on at a time.

In most browsers one can use the plus(+) and minus(-) icons to open and close groups of data in the Table of Contents. They are closed by default.

Click to reset the view to the full extent of the map (Approximate scale 1:3 423 000).

Click to apply changes to theme selection or to refresh/redraw the map.

At the bottom of the Table of Contents is a link to the Legend. This pop up window shows a legend for currently displayed themes.

The reference map, in the top right hand corner of the screen, shows the location of the view (displayed as a black rectangle) in relationship to the general regional geography (DEM and Landsat 7 image).
