Metadata for the Christmas Island online GIS

  • Metadata is data about data.

Project Summary

The Christmas Island Geographic Information System was developed to help with land use management and planning on Australia's Indian Ocean Territory of Christmas Island. The system stores thematic digital data in separate layers. The layers display the locations of roads, buildings and utilities, land surface and mining features, orthophotography and digital elevation, etc, to help identify opportunities for further phosphate mining in balance with nature conservation, urban development, post-mining rehabilitation and other activities such as eco-tourism and major new project proposals.

A sample of the available data layers is displayed in this prototype web interface. Information about each of the layers is presented in the following three metadata sheets :-

  • 1:1000 Topographic data based on 1987 aerial photography.
  • Orthophotography created from the 1987 aerial photography.
  • 2004 Ground Audit data from Department of Land Administration with attributes added from Australian Land Information Group (AUSLIG) and Territories Office. Only a small subset of available attributes and selected records are displayed in the Christmas Island GIS web-map version.

Interested users may also view the entire Christmas Island GIS metadata.

The original Christmas Island GIS system documentation has been preserved in PDF format and can be viewed online by clicking the appropriate manual below.

(Note: To view the PDF documentation Adobe Acrobat Reader will need to be installed. Get the latest Acrobat Reader here)

Compilation of data and its organisation into a GIS, along with the preparation of documentation, was undertaken by Geoscience Australia at the request of the Territories Office.
