Help/How to navigate the Yorke Peninsula (Moonta Subdomain) Online GIS

Most of this page is applicable to both the java and no-java versions of the application. Help specifically for the java application is written in italics.

This page is best viewed at 1024 x 768 resolution, with at least 32768 colours.

This mapping system allows the user to add a variety of themes, zoom in and out, pan, and select the attributes of displayed themes. Please note that some layers e.g. Map symbols only display when zoomed in at scales greater than 1:1,000,000.

The mapping system starts with the coastline theme active (this layer cannot be turned off). The user can add themes by selecting them from the menu at the left of the page.

Basic navigation is done using the 4 buttons above or at the right of the image: (Holding the cursor over the icon displays the button function also.)

Zoom in icon This button is for zooming in.Select this button, drag a box in the main map and the view will redraw, zoomed in to the selected box. In the no-java version, just click in the map rather than dragging a box.

Zoom out icon This button is for zooming out. Select this button, click on a point in the main map and the view will redraw, zoomed out with the selected point in the centre of the view.
Note: There are limits on how far you can zoom in and out.

Re centre icon This button is for panning. Select this button, click on a point in the main map and the view will redraw, with the selected point in the centre of the view.

Query icon This button is for querying displayed features. Select this button, click on a feature in the main map and attributes of the selected feature will be displayed in a popup window.

Query box icon This button is for querying displayed features. Select this button, drag a box in the main map and attributes of all features within the box will be displayed in a popup window.

By checking the checkboxes in the menu on the left the user can select multiple vector and raster themes to overlay on the map.

Click to apply changes to theme selection. These themes will only draw efficiently at scales larger than 1:2,000,000. The maximum scale at which a map will draw is 1:250,000.

Click to reset the view to the full extent of the map. (Approximate scale 1:1,308,000)

Map Key iconAt the right is a link to the key. This pop up window shows a legend for displayed themes and their associated label values. Z scalebars with relevant units are also shown for raster images. For a full description of the geology units click the Detailed Geology Legend link.

Print iconGenerates a template of current view to print.

The reference map, in the top right hand corner of the screen, shows the location of the view (displayed as a black rectangle) in relationship to the TMI image of the area.

All data have the following projection details: Projection - Universal Transverse Mercator, Zone 53 (Note - the extreme eastern margin is in Zone 54)
Grid coordinates - Map Grid of Australia 1994 [MGA94]
Horizontal datum - Geocentric Datum of Australia [GDA94]
