Help for Yilgarn Craton Online GIS
This page is applicable to the no-java versions of the application and is best viewed at 1024 x 768 resolution, with at least 32768 colours.
This mapping system allows the user to add a variety of themes, zoom in and out, pan, and select the attributes of displayed themes.
The mapping system starts with a region outline and the aeromagnetic domains of the Yilgarn region. The outline layer cannot be turned off. The user can add themes by selecting them from the menu at the right of the page.
Basic navigation is done using the 4 buttons at the top of the image:
This button is for zooming in. Position the cursor in the center of the desired view and click in the map.
This button is for zooming out. Select this button, click on a point in the main map and the view will redraw, zoomed out with the selected point in the centre of the view.
Note: There are limits on how far you can zoom in and out.
This button is for panning. Select this button, click on a point in the main map and the view will redraw, with the selected point in the centre of the view.
This button is for querying displayed features. Select this button, click on a feature in the main map and attributes of the selected feature will be displayed in a popup window.
The legend (menu on the right) allows the user to select multiple vector themes to overlay on the map. Some themes, particularly geological polygon themes, are available as both transparent and opaque polygons. Only one opaque polygon or raster theme may be selected at any one time. Click GO at the top or bottom of the legend to apply changes to theme selection. Transparent layers which also have the opaque option are extremely slow to download (1 minute on broadband connection). The maximum scale at which a map will draw is 1:500,000.
At the top and bottom of the legend is a link to the key. This image shows the colours of all displayed themes and their associated label values.
Metadata (information about the datasets) can be obtained by clicking on the metadata icon, located beside the designated layer name in the legend.
The reference map, in the bottom left hand corner of the screen, shows the location of the view (displayed as a black rectangle) in relationship to the gravity image of the Yilgarn Craton. Navigation is also possible using the reference image. The main view will be redrawn, centered at the point clicked on in the reference image.
The projection of all data is Lambert Conformal Conic, with 2 standard parallels of -26° and -34°. The central meridian is 120° east. The latitude of origin is 0°. The datum is the Geocentric Datum of Australia (GDA94).
You can change the size of the output image by selecting an image size in pixels from the lookup table, located under the main map. You can also change the extents of the image by selecting a map extent in the 'Zoom To' lookup table.
Note: Larger maps take longer to download.
The 'OZCHRON SampleID' look up table allows you to zoom to a particular geochronology sample point, by selecting a sample ID. Sample Id's can be found in a Shrimp pooled ages query.
