At 1:250 000 size and any other selection criteria apply to new feature occurrences. All feature occurrences existing in the TOPO250K NTDB will be retained unless there is clear evidence they no longer exist.

Polygons that are smaller than the minimum size for inclusion and are in groups may be aggregated into one larger representative polygon where they are less than 0.5 mm apart at map scale.
 
 

Inter-Feature Relationship Rules - Internal to Associated Dataset

Foreshore Flats cannot overlap;
each other or any other polygon in the Marine Dataset.

Inter-Feature Relationship Rules - External to Associated Dataset

Foreshore Flats must be contained within;
Sea, Watercourse Area or Lake.

A Foreshore Flat edge (feature type polygon) will be coincident with shoreline and WaterbodyBoundaries (except junction and Limit Of Data) bounding the sea, estuarine lakes or estuarine watercourse areas where the Foreshore Flat abuts these features and falls within 50 metres at 1:250 000 and 20 metres at 1:100 000 of either the shoreline or WaterbodyBoundary features.

Geodatabase Rules

At 1:100 000 size and any other selection criteria apply to all feature occurrences.

At 1:250 000 size and any other selection criteria apply to new feature occurrences. All feature occurrences existing in the TOPO250K NTDB will be retained unless there is clear evidence they no longer exist.

Lighthouse will be named in the data, but will only be named on the map (in accordance with approved reference sources) where the lighthouse does not have the same root name as the Island or Cape feature. For example, the name Bedout Lighthouse would not be shown when it is situated on Bedout Island.

The lighthouse need not be operational to be included.

Navigation beacons will not be classified as lighthouses.

Reference should be made to Supplementary Guideline No 6 (Lighthouses vs Marine Lights) when making decisions on whether a feature should be included in the new product.

Revision source material for Lighthouses will be supplied.

Where a Lighthouse and an Offshore rock are shown on the base material/digital data or revision source material to be coincident, they should be coincident in the NTDB. If one of the two features had been previously displaced by a maximum of 10 metres in any direction they should be adjusted back to their true coincident position.  

Where a lighthouse and an offshore rock are in close proximity the lighthouse symbol will be given precedence but the name of the offshore rock will take precedence over the lighthouse name.

At 1:100 000 size and any other selection criteria apply to all feature occurrences.

At 1:250 000 size and any other selection criteria apply to new feature occurrences. All feature occurrences existing in the TOPO250K NTDB will be retained unless there is clear evidence they no longer exist.

When a feature is larger than 3906 sq. m at 1:250 000 or 625 sq. m at 1:100 000 and has a RELATIONSHIP Code of Bare, the island feature type may be used where it provides a clearer representation of feature.

When larger than 390625 sq. m at 1:250 000 or 62 500 sq. m at 1:100 000 an offshore rock should be represented as an area feature, either as a reef or shoal as appropriate. The reef feature will be considered the default.

Where a Lighthouse and an Offshore rock are shown on the base material/digital data or revision source material to be coincident, they should be coincident in the NTDB. If one of the two features had been previously displaced by a maximum of 10 metres in any direction they should be adjusted back to their true coincident position.  

Where a lighthouse and an offshore rock are in close proximity, the lighthouse symbol will be given precedence (the offshore rock will have a symbol number of 0) but the name of the offshore rock will take precedence over the lighthouse name.

Sea walls which form part of the coastline will be coincident with the equivalent section of the Shoreline. There must be a vertex in the Shoreline feature at the exact location of the start and end points of the Sea walls. The Shoreline must continue outwards from both endpoints of the Sea walls.

Wharves coincident with the coastline will be cloned as sea walls.  This will create two coincident arcs in the one feature class, which will be considered a exception to the standard topology structure rules.

Map Rules

Sea walls will be labelled ‘sea wall’.

Geodatabase Rules

At 1:100 000 size and any other selection criteria apply to all feature occurrences.

At 1:250 000 size and any other selection criteria apply to new feature occurrences. All feature occurrences existing in the TOPO250K NTDB will be retained unless there is clear evidence they no longer exist.

Descriptive notes may be included in the textnote field.  

Inter-Feature Relationship Rules - Internal to Associated Dataset

Shoal cannot overlap;
each other or any other polygon in the Marine Dataset.

Inter-Feature Relationship Rules - External to Associated Dataset

Shoals cannot overlap;
Mainland or Island.

A MarineHazardAreas edge (feature class polygon) will be coincident with shoreline and WaterbodyBoundaries (except junction and Limit Of Data) bounding the sea, estuarine lakes or estuarine watercourse areas where the MarineHazardAreas abuts these features and falls within 50 metres at 1:250 000 and 20 metres at 1:100 000 of either the shoreline or WaterbodyBoundary features. 

Map Rules

Shoals should be named, where name is known.

Descriptive notes may be included.
