Geodatabase Rules

General - All Scales

No feature type field exists for this annotation feature class. The feature type has only been included throughout the specification documentation for ease of reference.

Only Annotation associated with, or derived from, entities in feature classes grouped within the Administration feature dataset should exist within the AdministrationAnno feature class.

Wherever possible annotation should be stored using the subclasses indicated under AnnotationClassID. Annotation stored as inline text should be kept to a minimum.

Administration Annotation will only be constructed for the following feature classes:
Defence And Prohibited, Forestry Reserve, Indigenous Land, Nature Conservation Reserve, Water Supply Reserve.

Type for large polygons and long linear features may be held in an annotation feature for each word to allow for spacing and differences in orientation, see Section 2 chapter 4.

Annotation should not contain any HTML tags within the blob element, nor should it contain any special characters.

Editing and placement of Annotation should be conducted in the appropriate MGA 1994 zone to ensure the spatial position of type on the map face can be correctly represented.

Annotation should only occur where the associated feature either has a sufficient dimension size or Upperscale value to be shown at 1:100 000 scale or a smaller scale/larger extent (eg 1:250 000, 1:1 000 000)

Geodatabase Rules

General - All Scales

All 'Defence and Prohibited' areas obtained from designated Authoritative Providers will be included within the database regardless of size. Where a 'Defence and Prohibited' area is represented on the previous edition map (and there is supporting evidence for its continued existence) the producer should seek clarification from Geoscience Australia on how and/or if these features should be captured in the revised database.

The Authority classification for prohibited areas should not be populated with a value of 'Not Applicable'. All prohibited areas obtained from miscellaneous sources (e.g. previous edition map or special instruction) whose authority is not known should have an authority classification of 'Other (not specified)'.

'Defence and Prohibited' areas will be named if names are included in the supplied material. The only exception to this is where populating the name would provide sensitive information in which case the name should be held in the metadata comment field and the name field should remain unpopulated.

The attribution of the Classification field will be based upon advice provided by Geoscience Australia when not provided as part of the supplied material.

Where the Defence and Prohibited Area is identified by a number only, the name field will populated with the type of reserve (e.g. Quarantine Area) and the number will not be translated from the database supplied by the designated Authoritative providers.

The UPPERSCALE value will be applied based on a 'Defence And Prohibited' area meeting the minimum size for data capture/map representation. Where a named 'Defence And Prohibited' is broken up into a number of areas with the identical attributes of 'NAME' and 'AUTHORITY', then all the component areas should be assigned the 'UPPERSCALE' value based on the total area of the sum of the component parts.

Inter-Feature Relationship Rules - Internal to Associated Dataset

General - All Scales

Defence and Prohibited areas can only overlap the following features in the Administration Feature Dataset:
Nature Conservation Reserves.

When the dimension is equal to or greater than 500 000 for:
-a specific Administration Area, or
-a set of named reserve areas which have identical attribute combinations using the FEATURE TYPE, NAME and AUTHORITY fields,
the following paragraph will apply:

Where the edge of a Administration Area polygon has a similar shape to another Administration Area feature (of the following feature types: Defence And Prohibited, Forestry Reserve, Indigenous Land, Nature Conservation Reserve, Water Supply Reserve), and is within 50 metres of the feature, then the relevant section of polygon edge for the Administration Area will be coincident with this other feature. Where both features are of similar shape but the distance separating them is greater than 50 metres the relevant section of polygon edge for the Administration Area will be made coincident with the feature if it appears the relevant section of polygon edge for the Administration Area should be following the feature. These rules will not apply where two reserves are separated by a road reserve. In such cases the separation between the two boundaries will be maintained.

Inter-Feature Relationship Rules - External to Associated Dataset

General - All Scales

When the dimension is equal to or greater than 500 000 for:
-a specific Administration Area, or
-a set of named reserve areas which have identical attribute combinations using the FEATURE TYPE, NAME and AUTHORITY fields,
the following rules will apply:

Where the edge of a Administration Area (of the following feature types: Defence And Prohibited, Forestry Reserve, Indigenous Land, Nature Conservation Reserve, Water Supply Reserve) has a similar shape to a feature listed below, it must be coincident with that feature if the feature meets the minimum size criteria for 1:100 000 or 1:250 000 and:
- the edge of the Administration Area falls within 50 metres of the feature, or
- the edge of the Administration Area appears that it should follow the feature.

Road
Sea Wall
Shoreline
State Border
Pipelines (feature class)

Crater (feature type (polygon edge))
Deformation Areas (feature class (polygon edge))
Flats (feature class (polygon edge))
Lake (feature type (polygon edge))

Pondage Areas (feature class (polygon edge))
Recreation Area (feature type (polygon edge))
Reservoirs (feature class (polygon edge))
Waste Management Area (feature type (polygon edge))
Watercourse Area (feature type (polygon edge))

The above rules will not apply where two reserves are separated by a road reserve. In such cases the separation between the two boundaries will be maintained.

Map Rules

General - All Scales

Defence And Prohibited Areas will be named where named in the database. Where the reserve is identified by a number only, the Defence And Prohibited Areas will be labelled with the type of reserve (e.g. Quarantine Area) and the number will not be shown.

Defence And Prohibited areas with the classification of "Defence Land Prohibited" or "Non-Defence Prohibited" should have an accompanying note 'prohibited area' unless the words 'prohibited area' are included in the name.
Defence And Prohibited areas with the classification of "Defence Land Restricted" should have an accompanying note 'restricted area' unless the words 'restricted area' are included in the name.
Type style for this note will be that specified for 'notes for areas restricted access' Section 2 chapter 7.1 and 8.1. Where the reserve is identified by a number, only the reserve type will be shown.

Only 'Defence And Prohibited' areas which have an Upperscale equal to or greater than the applicable map scale of the product being produced will be represented on the map face. (eg For a 'Defence And Prohibited' area to be represented on a 1:100 000 product it must have an Upperscale value of '100000' or '250000')

Geodatabase Rules

General - All Scales

All Forestry Reserves obtained from designated Authoritative Providers will be included within the database regardless of size.

The Authority classification for reserve areas should not be populated with 'Not Applicable'. All reserves whose authority is not known, should have a authority value of 'Other (not specified)'.

Forestry Reserve features will be named where named in the databases supplied by the designated Authoritative Providers. The exception is State Forests within Victoria, where these will be attributed with a generic name of 'STATE FOREST' only. Where the Forestry Reserve is identified by a number only, the name field will populated with the type of reserve (e.g. Timber Reserve) and the number will not be translated from the database supplied by the designated Authoritative providers.

The UPPERSCALE value will be applied based on a 'Forestry Reserve' meeting the minimum size for data capture/map representation. Where a named Forestry Reserve is broken up into a number of areas with the identical attributes of 'NAME' and 'AUTHORITY', then all the component areas should be assigned the 'UPPERSCALE' value based on the total area of the sum of the component parts.

Inter-Feature Relationship Rules - Internal to Associated Dataset

General - All Scales

Forestry Reserves can only overlap the following features in the Administration Feature Dataset:
Water Supply Reserves.

General - All Scales

All Mining Reserves obtained from designated Authoritative Providers will be included within the database regardless of size.

The UPPERSCALE value will be applied based on a 'Mining Reserves' meeting the minimum size for data capture/map representation. Where a named Mining Reserve is broken up into a number of areas with the identical attributes of 'NAME' and 'AUTHORITY', then all the component areas should be assigned the 'UPPERSCALE' value based on the total area of the sum of the component parts.

Geodatabase Rules

General - All Scales

All Nature Conservation Reserves obtained from designated Authoritative Providers will be included within the database regardless of size.

The Authority classification for reserve areas should not be populated with 'Not Applicable'. All reserves whose authority is not known, should have a authority value of 'Other (not specified)'.

Indigenous sacred sites will not be named as sacred sites on the map even if named on a previous edition map, but the feature may be a lake, pool or waterhole in which case the appropriate map symbol and hydrological name will be used.

Nature Conservation Reserve features will be named where named in the databases obtained from the designated Authoritative Providers. Where the reserve is identified by a number only, the name field will populated with the type of reserve (e.g. Marine Park) and the number will not be translated from the database supplied by the designated Authoritative providers.

The UPPERSCALE value will be applied based on a 'Nature Conservation Reserves' meeting the minimum size for data capture/map representation. Where a named Nature Conservation Reserve is broken up into a number of areas with the identical attributes of 'NAME' and 'AUTHORITY', then all the component areas should be assigned the 'UPPERSCALE' value based on the total area of the sum of the component parts.

Inter-Feature Relationship Rules - Internal to Associated Dataset

General - All Scales

Nature Conservation Reserves can only overlap the following features in the Administration Feature Dataset:
Other Nature Conservation Reserves, Defence And Prohibited areas and Water Supply Reserves.

Map Rules

General - All Scales

Nature Conservation Reserves s will be named where named in the database. Where the reserve is identified by a number only, the Nature Conservation Reserve will be labelled with the type of reserve (e.g. Marine Park) and the number will not be shown.

Only 'Nature Conservation Reserve' areas which have an Upperscale equal to or greater than the applicable map scale of the product being produced will be represented on the map face.(eg For a 'Nature Conservation Reserve' area to be represented on a 1:100 000 product it must have an Upperscale value of '100000' or '250000')

Geodatabase Rules

General - All Scales

All Water Supply Reserves obtained from designated Authoritative Providers will be included within the database regardless of size.

The Authority classification for reserve areas should not be populated with 'Not Applicable'. All reserves whose authority is not known, should have a authority value of 'Other (not specified)'.

Water Supply Reserve features will be named where named in the databases supplied by the designated Authoritative Providers. Where the reserve is identified by a number only, the name field will populated with the type of reserve (e.g. Water Supply Reserve) and the number will not be translated from the database supplied by the designated Authoritative providers.

Where a Water Supply Reserve surrounds, or is coincident with a waterbody of the same root name, name the waterbody in the Waterbodies feature dataset and populate the Water Supply Reserve feature type with the generic name 'Water Supply Reserve' in the name field.

Water Supply Reserves in Western Australia are to be excluded from the NTDBs, the exception will be those Water Supply Reserves, with restricted access, which are used for urban consumption.

The UPPERSCALE value will be applied based on a 'Water Supply Reserves' meeting the minimum size for data capture/map representation. Where a named Water Supply Reserve is broken up into a number of areas with the identical attributes of 'NAME' and 'AUTHORITY', then all the component areas should be assigned the 'UPPERSCALE' value based on the total area of the sum of the component parts.

Inter-Feature Relationship Rules - Internal to Associated Dataset

General - All Scales

Water Supply Reserves can only overlap the following features in the Administration Feature Dataset:
Nature Conservation Reserves and Forestry Reserves.

Pondage Areas (feature class (polygon edge))
Recreation Area (feature type (polygon edge))
Reservoirs (feature class (polygon edge))
Waste Management Area (feature type (polygon edge))
Watercourse Area (feature type (polygon edge))

The above rules will not apply where two reserves are separated by a road reserve. In such cases the separation between the two boundaries will be maintained.

Map Rules

General - All Scales

Water Supply Reserve features will be named where named in the database. Where the reserve is identified by a number only, the Water Supply Reserve will be labelled with the type of reserve (e.g. Water Supply Reserve) and the number will not be shown.

Where a Water Supply Reserve surrounds, or is coincident with a waterbody of the same root name, name the waterbody in the Waterbodies cover and do not name the Water Supply Reserve. However a descriptive note 'water supply reserve' should be added in parenthesis following the waterbody name.

Only 'Water Supply Reserve' areas which have an Upperscale equal to or greater than the applicable map scale of the product being produced will be represented on the map face.(eg For a 'Water Supply Reserve' area to be represented on a 1:100 000 product it must have an Upperscale value of '100000' or '250000')
