Marine and Coastal
Geoscience Australia's Marine and Coastal Environment Group provides the Australian Government with geoscientific advice and products to help it meet its objectives for implementation of Australia's Oceans Policy within Australia’s Exclusive Economic Zone.
Geoscience Australia has released the data acquired on its recent marine survey to the Petrel Sub-basin off the Northern Territory coast.
The purpose of the survey was to gather pre-competitive geophysical and biophysical data on seabed environments within targeted areas of the Petrel Sub-basin to help facilitate an assessment of the CO2 storage potential in these areas of the basin. The survey was undertaken in collaboration with the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS), as part of the Australian Government's National Low Emission Coal Initiative (NLECI). The Petrel Sub-basin Post Survey Report is available for free download as are the following datasets:
- Ecology/Seabed underwater video footage and still images
- High Resolution Bathymetry Grids
- Seabed Geochemistry/Porewater TCO2 and TCO2 flux
- Seabed Geochemistry/Chlorins
- Seabed Geochemistry/Chlorophyll abc and pheaophytin
- High Resolution Multibeam Sonar Seabed Backscatter Grids
- Seabed Geochemistry/TOC, TN and carbon and nitrogen isotopes
- Seabed Geochemistry/Sediment Oxygen Demand
- Seabed Geochemistry/Specific surface area and total carbonate
- Ecology/Infaunal morphospecies identifications
- Seabed Sediment Grain Size Data
- Sub-bottom profiles
These data can be individually downloaded from our website (following the links above), or can be ordered as part of the Petrel Sub-Basin Data Package [PDF 552KB].
