MediaMedia Hotline – 1800 882 035Our Media Hotline is attended 24 hours a day, seven days a week and is a free call within Australia. We strive to act promptly to media requests, whether it is to ask about our current projects, make enquiries on geoscientific topics or arrange interviews with our scientists. Has there been an earthquake?Geoscience Australia provides an earthquake alert system which responds to earthquakes in Australia and our region 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Seismologists and media officers work together to provide information to the media about earthquakes as quickly as possible. Please call our Media Hotline if you would like more information about earthquakes. We can arrange interviews and also have broadcast-quality betacam library footage available for TV stations. The Australian Tsunami Warning SystemFollowing the Indian Ocean tsunami in December 2004, the Australian Government announced a major initiative to establish an Australian National Tsunami Warning System. $68.9 million has been allocated over four years to progressively establish a more comprehensive Australian Tsunami Warning System (ATWS) to be managed by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, Geoscience Australia and Emergency Management Australia, with support from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID). The ATWS will be one of the first Indian Ocean regional warning systems, and will join the planned network of national systems, which collectively will form the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning System (IOTWS). The ATWS will also facilitate warnings issued in the South-west Pacific through the Pacific Tsunami Warning System (PTWS).
