The Bathurst Digital Geology Data Package comprises a digital compilation of regional geological mapping of the Bathurst (SI5508) 1:250,000 map by the Australian Geological Survey Organisation and the New South Wales Department of Mineral Resources, under the National Geoscience Mapping Accord from 1991 to 1996. The dataset includes polygon and line layers depicting the geological rock types, structures, geochemistry and regolith landforms. It also includes point layers depicting sample descriptions, structural measurements, mineral occurrences, fossils, geochronology, photographs and sample sites.

Geological mapping was compiled through integration of field mapping, aerial photograph interpretation, 250m line spaced airborne geophysics (magnetics and radiometrics), university studies and open file company reports. Mapping was digitised in Intergraph Microstation and ArcInfo from compilation sheets compiled onto 1:25,000 and 1:50,000 scale topographic film bases. Preliminary data was released in hardcopy and ArcInfo format in October 1994. Since then, considerable further editing has been performed in ArcInfo (under UNIX SunOS and Solaris) to create the current version. Conversion to MapInfo format uses Arclink software.

Positional accuracy:

Mapping accuracy was controlled by GPS satellites, 1:25,000 and 1:50,000 scale maps and in the main is less than 100 metres. Digitising accuracy is taken as approximately <1mm (25-50 metres on the ground).

Attribute accuracy:

Geological polygons are described by the basic attributes MAP_SYMBOL, GROUP, UNITNAME, MEMBER and LITH_DESC. The lookup tables GISDATA.LUT provides many additional geological polygon attributes. Geological linework and structural symbol points are described by the attributes AGSO_CODE, CLASS and DESC. Other point and polygon coverages contain detailed attribute information on regolith, sample descriptions, mineral deposits, structural readings, fossils, geochemical analyses, geochronology and photographic images.

Logical Consistency:

Coverages fall into three feature groups: polygons + lines, lines + points, points only. All lines, points and polygons in all coverages are labelled and fully attributed, EXCEPT in the cross section coverages which are designed for cartographic display and are not geographically registered. All care has been taken to ensure that all lines intersect at nodes, no duplicate lines exist and all polygons are closed with no duplicate labels. Geological faults exist as dangling lines (overshoots) in polygon coverages.


Data and basic descriptive attributes are complete apart from the WIDTH and NAME attributes of geological linework which have not been populated. The extended geological attribute lookup table (GISDATA.LUT) contains much additional information about the rock units, but some attributes may not be complete for all rock units.
