Abstract:

The Pine Creek GIS package has been prepared jointly by AGSO and the Northern Territory Survey for release in both digital and hard copy (atlas) formats. Based on the 1:500 000 geological map of the Pine Creek Geosyncline (2nd edition) published by BMR in 1984, the GIS has been supplemented where possible by recently acquired data from mapping in the Litchfield, Katherine, and South Alligator areas. The aim of this project was to bring together almost 45 years of regional mapping projects by both organisations by integrating existing hard copy geological maps and other relevant geoscientific data into a digital Metallogenic Geographic Information System (GIS). The aim of the GIS was to try to provide new insights into the regional controls on many of the mineral deposit styles represented in the Inlier. Digital coverages derived from this base map include solid geology, regional and contact metamorphism, and a number of interpreted layers featuring the distribution of the dominant lithologies and minerals such as carbonate, graphite, sulphide, haematite and magnetite. Geophysical layers feature the regional magnetic and gravity coverages in the digital data package, but incorporate data from both regional and detail surveys in the atlas. A set of geochemical layers has been prepared by averaging whole-rock geochemical data with individual units on the geological map. A Landsat Thematic Manner (TM) mosaic image has been compiled. It is a greyscale image providing accurate positional control.

Data quality

Lineage:

The project was originally developed in ARC/INFO Version 6. In this data set, all data have single precision geographic coordinates (decimal longitude and latitude). The Arc/Info coverages have the following characterisics; Feature attribute tables are fully expanded instead of using related lookup tables.The lookup tables will also be provided for polygon coverages. Primary data sets have two descriptor (INFO) files containing information about the data (meta-data) in items conforming to the FINDAR questionnaire from NRIC. For more information the structure of these data sets follows closely that described in Appendix A of BMR Record 1992/63, Results from GIS Development Contract, by Robyn Gallagher. Because this GIS was developed for investigating metallogeny on a regional (rather than detailed) scale the base map was digitised at 1:500 000 scale from the original colour separate reproduction material (repromat) used in making the final colour printing plates. Some additional data was imported from the Anson 1:100 000.

Attribute accuracy:

Attributes are mostly a representation of information on the source maps and/or geoscientific knowledge at that time. They should be viewed in that context - some of the information/interpretation is old and may be incorrect/outdated.

Logical Consistency:

Data has been checked visually on plots and for topological consistency using in-house routines and Arcinfo/Arcview/Ermapper GIS software. As much as possible, every effort has been made to ensure that the accuracy and standards of the source data have been maintained.

Completeness:

The data are complete for nominated scale for intended use of 1:500,000.
