This dataset is a spatial representation of the Geoscience Australia Earthquake Database. The dataset contains recorded magnitudes for earthquakes on and near Australia. Local events of magnitude 4 and above and regional events of magnitude 6 and above are displayed.

NOTE : The "End Date" in this record refers to the download dataset. In the National Geoscience Datasets Online GIS ( these data are updated on a weekly basis.

Data quality


The data is derived from the World Earthquake Database, extracted directly and converted into a spatial Arcinfo coverage. Items feature and UFI are added to complete the quality assurance.

Logical Consistency:

A geoscientist visually inspected the finished dataset to make sure the attributes were accurate and the data were consistent spatially with the quality-controlled database it was derived from. Tests are also carried out on these data for data completeness, correct spatial representation, attribute accuracy, logical consistency and correctness, and where appropriate for compliance with Geoscience Australia's GIS data dictionary.


The dataset coverage is complete for the Australian Jurisdictional Area.
