Outcrop geology was obtained directly from the following four map sheets:

Marble Bar (1:250K), Nullagine(1:250K), Yarrie(1:250K) and Port Hedland

An adjustment was carried out of the original outcrop geology.

This adjustment was primarily carried out with the aid of Landsat -5 TM imagery.

Data quality


Original data was captured at 1:25,000 scale and published at 1:250 000 scale. This data was scanned and digitised with Intergraph software and then imported into Arc/Info software. Due to poor topographic bases from original data it was decided to adjust the solid geology lines to better fit the landsat image which was a more accurate example of the geology.

Positional accuracy:

Cross-checking with landsat 5TM satellite imagery. It can be estimated that about 95% of all features could be expected to have an accuracy within 150 metres.

Attribute accuracy:

Attribute data was obtained from a) outcrop geology mapping shown in the 1:250k map sheets of Marble Bar, Nullagine, Port Hedland and Yarrie, b) where outcrop geology mapping was absent, an interpretation of magnetics images plotted with a resolution of 180m was used.

Logical Consistency:

Some of the data has been checked in the field with mixed results. While line data had a high degree of accuracy, polygonal data seemed to vary. This was mostly due to conflicting opinions between original mapping and subsequent field mapping.


All geological units with an area of greater than 20,000 square metres are represented in this layer which covers the entire dataset area.
