Title: Solid geology of the Sir Samuel 1:250 000 map sheet area

Custodian: Geoscience Australia

Jurisdiction: Australia

Mapping of outcrop geology on Sir Samuel 1:250 000 map sheet in the Eastern Goldfields, Western Australia, as part of the National Geoscience Mapping Accord (NGMA).

Briefly, mapping consists of geological boundaries/units, faults, fractures, folds, veins, dykes, joints, linears, marker beds, trends, structural measurements, and mineral deposits..

Data quality

The geological lines and polygons for the Sir Samuel 1:250 000 solid geological map were produced digitally on screen in Arc/Info at AGSO, using published 1:100 000 geological maps, magnetic and gravity images of the area as backdrops.

Positional accuracy:

The positional accuracy of features on the face of the Sir Samuel 1:250 000 solid geological map is better than 100 -200 m because it largely depends on two factors: (1) accuracy of the published 1:100 000 outcrop geological maps (100 to 200 m) and (2) accuracy of the aeromagnetic data (probably less than 100 m).

Attribute accuracy:

The bulk of attributes in this dataset are qualitative and quantitative geological observations and measurements. Classifications of lithology and linear geological features are largely interpretative, based on conventional mapping techniques (field observations, photo/imagery interpretation, sample collection and analysis), and adhere to well established and standardised classification schemes. Structural measurements are quantitative, measured using standard field mapping instruments.

Logical Consistency:

This dataset has been subject to independent post-production validation and testing. Up to eighty tests, most using a sampling regimen, have been carried out on the dataset to ensure its integrity. Tests are carried out for consistency, and where appropriate for compliance with Geoscience Australia GIS data dictionary. Although the validation procedure has not been subject to rigorous statistical analysis it is intuitively estimated that fewer than 5 per cent errors occur in those aspects of the data subject to validation.

The spatial dataset is complete for the entire Sir Samuel 1:250 000 sheet area.
