The product comprises digital outcrop geology and interpreted basement geology layers in ArcInfo, MapInfo and ArcView formats. The data were compiled from geological mapping of the Parkes 100K sheet from 1995 to 1999 by AGSO and the NSWDMR under the NGMA. The data layers are a subset of the Forbes 250K sheet GIS data package.

Data quality


Geological mapping was compiled through integration of field mapping, aerial photograph interpretation, 400m line spaced airborne geophysics (magnetics and radiometrics), university studies and open file company reports. Mapping was scanned and digitised in Intergraph Microstation and Arc/Info from compilation sheets compiled on to 1:50,000 scale topographic film bases. Preliminary data was released in hardcopy in April 1999. Since then, considerable further editing has been performed in Arc/Info to create the current version. Data was converted to MapInfo and ArcView formats from Arc/Info.

Positional accuracy:

Vector data were compiled on NSW LIC 1:50,000 scale topographic base maps. Most point data was located by non-differential GPS with a typical accuracy of 50-100 metres. Historical point data was located on 1:100,000 and 1:250,000 scale maps with a typical accuracy of 100-500 metres. Digitising accuracy is taken as approximately <1mm (~50 metres on the ground).

Attribute accuracy:

Geological units are defined based on field observations and interpretation of geophysical and airphoto images. The LITH_DESC attribute provides a brief summary of the description of each unit. More comprehensive unit descriptions can be found in the Explanatory Notes for the map area (AGSO Record 2000/20 - Explanatory Notes Forbes 1:250 000 geological sheet (SI55-7)). Geological linework is coded via the AGSO_CODE and DESC attributes according to the confidence of the map compiler as accurate, approximate, inferred or concealed.

Logical Consistency:

Attribute data for geological layers comply to the AGSO Geoscience Data Dictionary - ( Data layers fall into three feature groups: polygons + lines, lines + points, points only. All lines, points and polygons in all layers are labelled and fully attributed, EXCEPT in the cross sections which are designed for cartographic display and are not geographically registered. All care has been taken to ensure that all lines intersect at nodes, no duplicate lines exist and all polygons are closed with no duplicate labels. Geological faults exist as dangling lines (overshoots) in polygon layers.


Data and basic descriptive attributes are complete (eg: MAP_SYMB for polygon data, and AGSO_CODE for line and point data). Some attributes, such as UNITNAME, are not fully populated as some units do not have formal names.
