SKIPPY seismic recording stations (National Geoscience Dataset)Note: This metadata describes the dataset in accordance with the ANZLIC (Australia New Zealand Land Information Council) Core Metadata Guidelines Version 2. Dataset citationANZLIC unique identifier: ANZCW0703003617 Title: SKIPPY seismic recording stations (National Geoscience Dataset) CustodianCustodian: Geoscience Australia Jurisdiction: Australia DescriptionAbstract: This dataset shows the locations of the Australian National Universities network of SKIPPY stations. The SKIPPY experiment was commenced by the Research School of Earth Sciences in 1993 and continues to the present day. During the experiment, groups of broad band portable seismographs are deployed across regions of Australia to record the seismic energy from distant earthquakes. Each station has a unique identifier made up of the deployment mnemonic, eg. SA, SB, SC etc. followed by station number. The seismic data were then inverted to produce a number of Earth models; for example, tomograms of shear wave velocity to 400km depth and crustal models in the form of receiver functions. The first pass of the continent produced generalised tomograms for the entire continent. Subsequent deployments are aimed at increasing the definition of features in the tomograms that appear to be significant in understanding the structure and evolution of the continental sub-crustal lithosphere and the asthenosphere. Access constraints: Internal use only Free Data DownloadData qualityLineage: The dataset was generated from an ASCII file of SKIPPY station locations using Arcview. Positional accuracy: Nominal Scale 1:100,000 Positional accuracy is 200m and is defined using GPS. Attribute accuracy: High Logical Consistency: A geoscientist visually inspected the finished dataset to make sure the attributes were accurate and the data were consistent spatially with current scientific information. Tests are also carried out on these data for data completeness, correct spatial representation, attribute accuracy, logical consistency and correctness, and where appropriate for compliance with Geoscience Australia's GIS data dictionary. Completeness: The dataset coverage is complete for the whole of continental Australia. Contact information
