This contour dataset was used to generate the Basement Relief Image of Australian Onshore and Offshore Sedimentary Basins (GEOMET No. 2747) originally compiled as part of AGSO marketing activities aimed at encouraging further exploration of Australian oil and gas reserves. The image/contours highlight distribution and shape of Australian onshore and offshore sedimentary basins. For most of the mapped area the image/contours reflect depth to the basement (onshore basins, eastern and southern margins). In the absence of depth to the basement data, the deepest horizon or the horizon reflecting rift-phase development of the basin has been mapped (North West shelf).

These data are only the rough working datasets used in the compilation of the Basement Relief Image of Australian Onshore and Offshore Sedimentary Basins (GEOMET No. 2747) and as such there is no standard or quality control process enacted on these.

Data quality

Lineage:

Forty-four published/unpublished contour maps (1977-1994) were used in the compilation, at scales from 1:250 000 to1:2 000 000. Large-scale maps were generalised to the 1:5 000 000 scale. Contour maps were digitised using Petroseis. Before gridding, outcrops of crystalline basement and some Proterozoic basins (Nabberu, Bangemall, Hamersley, Kimberley) were outlined by zero contours. There were no data for the Wiso Basin. Petroseis contours were converted into an Arcinfo coverage. This dataset was then used to generate the Basement Relief Image (GEOMET No. 2747)

Variable as the datasets come from a variety of sources at a variety of scales. To accurately determine the source information of data used in compilation as second dataset is stored (dtbase_contours_references) which indicates the bibliographic references of poligonal areas of the final contour dataset (dtbase_contours).

Attribute accuracy:

Accurate as from the source information available and the source information is available (dtbase_contours_references).

Logical Consistency:

Data has been checked visually and digitally for consistency with source information. Every effort has been made to ensure that the accuracy of the source data have been maintained.

Completeness:

Complete for the coverage of continental Australia and Australia's continental margins.
