This solid geology map combines information from aeromagnetic and gravity interpretation by the author at 1:100 000 scale with that from outcrop geology to provide a continuous representation of the distribution of Palaeoproterozoic and Archaean rocks. The Mapping of outcrop geology for Leonora 1:250 000 map Sheet (2nd Edition) was undertaken by Duggan, M.B., Williams, P.R., Jagodzinski, E.A., Rattenbury, M., Champion, D.C., Stewart, A.J., and Bastrakova, I.V., largely as part of the National Geoscience Mapping Accord (NGMA -1990 to 2000).

Briefly, the data set and map, present geological boundaries/units, faults, fractures, folds, veins, dykes, joints, marker beds, trends, structural measurements, and mineral deposits.

Data quality


The geological lines and polygons for the Leonora 1:250 000 solid geological map were drawn on film over plots of Total Magnetic Intensity (TMI), TMI first vertical derivative, Bouguer gravity, first vertical derivative of Bouguer gravity and outcrop geology at 1:100 000 scale, in GDA94 MGA51 datum and projection. The drawings on film were scanned and the resulting image digitised on screen using Microstation software. The digital lines and attributes were subsequently imported into ARC/INFO for complete attribution, editing and map composition.

Positional accuracy:

The positional accuracy of features on the face of the Leonora 1:250 000 solid geological map is in the order of 200 m and depends on the following factors: spatial accuracy of the published 1:100 000 outcrop geological maps (100 to 200 m) ; spatial accuracy of the aeromagnetic data (believed to be 25 - 50 m along lines, however lines are spaced at 400m); and spatial accuracy of lines drawn at 1:100 000 scale, representing the geophysical data sets.

Attribute accuracy:

The majority of attributes in this dataset are qualitative and quantitative geological observations and measurements. Classifications of lithology and linear geological features are largely interpretative, based on conventional mapping techniques (field observations, photo/imagery interpretation, sample collection and analysis), and adhere to well established and standardised classification schemes. Structural measurements are quantitative, measured using standard field mapping instruments.

Logical Consistency:

Interpretation of the geological and geophysical data sets has been undertaken in a consistent manner across the entire map sheet. However, outcrop of the bedrock is poor (< 20% of the map sheet) , irregularly distributed, and is not necessarily representative of the range of Archaean and Proterozoic rocks. Furthermore, many of the highly prospective greenstone lithologies are not discriminated (poorly magnetised) by the geophysical data (eg. basalt dolerite, felsic volcanic and sediments). Thus there may be considerable variation between the actual distribution of bedrock lithologies and that represented in the map - particularly for non outcropping regions of greenstone.

The digital dataset has been subject to independent post-production validation and testing. Up to eighty tests, most using a sampling regimen, have been carried out on the dataset to ensure its integrity. Tests are carried out for consistency, and where appropriate for compliance with Geoscience Australia's GIS data dictionary.


The spatial dataset is complete for the entire Leonora 1:250 000 sheet area.
