This dataset represents the distribution of Petroleum titles for offshore areas in the Bass and Durroon Basins region. This attributed dataset is used in production of the "Australian Acreage Release" which is released in April annually. Attributes and an additional lookup table contain information on the operator, dates of award and expiry, the number of 5' X 5' graticular blocks making up the title, the State which has jurisdiction, and the companies and their equity for each title.

Data quality



This dataset was generated from converted Microstation files used in production of Petroleum Exploration and Development data for use in the 2002 Acreage Release. Attributes are derived from Geoscience Australia's corporate Oracle PTAG (Petroleum Technical Advice Group) database currently under construction. The files are converted to an ArcView dataset and reprojected from the captured AGD66 datum to WGS84 datum. The data is visually checked by scientific staff for its correctness.

Positional accuracy:


Nominal Scale 1:5,000,000

Positional accuracy can vary as the spatial titles information is derived from a variety of sources. Data are supplied from the State and Territory mines departments as spatial datasets except Victoria who supply data as an ungeoreferenced CGM image (which is georeferenced in Microstation). These datasets are incorporated as-is so the positional accuracy is as supplied. The supplied accuracy of these datasets is not provided with the data.

Attribute accuracy:


Highly variable due to the varied source of the original information.

Logical Consistency:


A geoscientist visually inspected the finished dataset to make sure the attributes were accurate and the data were consistent spatially with current scientific information.



The dataset is complete for marine area of the Australian Jurisdictional Area.
