This dataset is a reference system for petroleum exploration and development wells drilled in Australia. Taken from the Geoscience Australia database called 'NPM'. The extent of wells is both onshore and offshore and is updated within the database on a regular basis. This particular dataset is extracted from the database on a weekly basis to be used for visualisation in external web mapping applications.

Data quality

Lineage:

This data is made from Well Completion Reports (WCR) and other scouting methods. It is loaded into the 'NPM' Oracle database by Geoscience Australia staff and is QC'ed on a regular basis. This particular point dataset was extracted from the database and then converted into ArcView shape files. This data is extracted out on a weekly basis for the purpose of web visualisation for clients.

Positional accuracy:

This will vary on the actual age of the well. The older the well the less accurate the position will be. Overall the position level will be at +/- 100m.

Attribute accuracy:

HIGH - All the attribute data has been entered in by GA staff from Well Completion Reports (WCR). The accuracy is only depended to human error or that of the WCR. All the data is QC'ed on a regular basis. This data has not been manipulated in anyway once it was exported from the database.
