Description

Abstract:

This dataset is a digital representation of the Quartz 1:100,000 geological map (First Edition, 1990). It consists of information, and digital geothematic data built to conform to Geoscience Australia Digital Data Dictionary for GIS Products Version 2004.01. The finished product has been provided as ArcView shape files and ArcInfo export files on CD-ROM. Extensive internal quality assurance and control has been performed on the layers.

Data quality

Lineage:

A printed hardcopy map of the Quartz geological map was scanned by Geoscience Australia, digitised partially using Microstation software, and finished using Unix-based ArcInfo software. The digital maps were plotted using ArcInfo AML scripts and checked visually for any errors. Unix-based ArcInfo QA scripts have been run on the digital data to ensure that it meets the requirements for Version 2004.01 of the Geoscience Australia Data Dictionary for GIS Products.

Positional accuracy:

Positional accuracy is difficult to determine. There are a large number of factors affecting accuracy including compilation, scanning, registering and digitising processes used to create the final digital products. It is possible to assume that the minimum error may be as low as 50 metres, and the maximum error as great as 200 metres for selected features in the digital representation. No field checks have been conducted to qualify the positional accuracy of the data presented, nor is this planned.

Attribute accuracy:

Attribute accuracy is based on the legends provided with the hardcopy map for some items in the digital data. Other attribute values are based on Oracle authority tables, as documented in the Data Dictionary Version 2004.01 for geology and lithology themes. Attribute values have been checked using Unix-based ArcInfo quality control scripts, and visual checking. For those items attributed exclusively using the legends on the map, there is less likelihood of apparent attribute error, as these can been checked visually as well as digitally. Attribute values based solely on data stored in Oracle tables and authority tables can be inaccurate or misleading. Two examples where this is likely to occur are in the unitage and rocktype values associated with polygon features, where more realistic real world values may be quite different to those apparent in the digital data. In part this can be explained by fact that these maps have been constructed using legacy mapping and publication references, which do not account for more recent age dating and geological re-interpretation.

Logical Consistency:

Logical consistency has been checked using Geoscience Australia's quality assurance scripting based on ArcInfo coverages constructed according to Version 2004.01 of the Geoscience Australia Data Dictionary for GIS Products.

Completeness:

Data is available for the entire dataset, all features have been classified according to Version 2004.01 of the Geoscience Australia Data Dictionary for GIS Products and verified using the legends on the hardcopy map and/or Oracle authority tables, by visual checks and automated QA/QC scripts.
