Title: North Australia Project Tanami Region and Arunta North: archive of GIS and associated data.

Custodian: Geoscience Australia

Jurisdiction: Australia

This data package is an archive of geospatially located and other digital geological and geophysical data covering the Tanami Region and north Arunta in the Northern Territory and Western Australia, a portion of the North Australia Project undertaken to understand elements within the North Australia Craton and its margins. It includes themes for a number of regional scale, 1:250 000 scale, and 1:100 000 scale geological map sheets, mineral locations, geophysical images, company drill hole and rock chip locations, company and Geoscience Australia geochemistry, and interpretations and synthesis derived from the data.

1:100 000 scale geological maps published by the Northern Territory Geological Survey were scanned by Geoscience Australia in TIF format and registered to frames in GDA 1994 coordinates. The maps may also be provided in unregistered PDF or JPEG formats.

1:250 000 scale geological maps sourced from the Bureau of Mineral Resources or the Northern Territory Geological Survey. Some maps were digitised under the NTData Project or by the SIMS group within the Australian Geological Survey Organisation. Digital geology is provided for all sheets, however the atest edition digital geology for the Birrindudu, The Granites, Mount Solitaire, Highland Rocks, and Mount Theo sheets have not been completed by the NTGS. The map faces have been scanned and georeferenced as images.

1:250 000 scale interpreted geology for the Tanami and The Granites sheets were obtained from the Northern Territory Geological Survey with graphic attributes, and converted to ArcInfo format. Polygon items do not comply with solgeol layers in the Geoscience Australia Digital Data Dictionary.

1: 500 000 scale geological maps and interpreted geology maps, sourced from Bureau of Mineral Resources mapping were scanned by

Geoscience Australia and are provided as registered or unregistered images. The North Arunta Region, May 2004 first edition interpreted geology map, published by the Northern Territory Geological Survey, was scanned and registered to the Albers Equal Area projection noted on the map.

Geophysical-dem-landsat images, geochemistry and mineral locations were sourced from Geoscience Australia corporate stores.

Exploration company drill holes, rockchip samples and assocatiated geochemistry for the Tanami and Arunta areas were sourced from Northern Territory Geological Survey data bases.

Regional interpretations were sourced and produced within Geoscience Australia.

Positional accuracy:

Not known precisely. For data compiled at 1:100 000 scale, assume errors of perhaps 50 metres to 200 metres. For data compilated at

1:250 000 scale, assume errors of perhaps 100 metres to 500 metres. Potential errors are generated at source, at compilation, and also during digital processing, and it is difficult to assess to quality or quantify any positional errors which may have occurred in creating the geographically located data presented on this DVD. Field checks are not planned.

Attribute accuracy:

Cannot be qualified for this data. Mineral location data and geochemistry derived from Geoscience Australia Oracle tables may have undergone some internal QA/QC upon entry. Mineral location attributes are derived primarily from the Northern Territory MODAT data base. Attribute items for the digital geological maps do not meet any standard data dictionary. Attribute values have not been checked with any formal QA/QC process involving Geoscience Australia Oracle authority tables to substantiate 'real-world' relationships. Plots generated from the digital geology data sourced within Geoscience Australia and its former agencies have been visually checked for errors based on map_symbol.

Logical Consistency:

There has been no formal QA/QC performed on any of the digital data to assess logical consistency.

This is not generally known, or not documented.
