Title: The Paterson Orogen 3D VRML model

Description

Abstract:

Two geological models, constructed using 3D GeoModeller, have been combined into a 3D VRML view of the Paterson Province. The models were built by members of the Paterson Project, as a two fold exercise, as well as by model building specialists within Geoscience Australia. The primary purpose of the model-building was to test the new GeoModeller software, which enables the construction of 3D models based on geological information. The secondary purpose was to test the project's understanding of the 3D geology of the study areas. The Paterson 100k map sheet and the Cottesloe Syncline models, including 2D sections, maps and images, were imported into the Virtual Reality Modelling Language (VRML). The VRML used allows the models and associated datasets to be viewed and manipulated over the web.

Lineage:

Projection: Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) Zone 51

Datum: Geocentric Datum of Australia (GDA94)

Coordinates: Map Grid of Australia 1994 (MGA94)

Geology: Scanned image of the Broadhurst 1:100 000 map sheet in the Paterson Range area.

Solid & Outcrop Observations:

Dem: Pseudocolour image of the Geoscience Australia 9-second Digital Elevation Model (2nd edition). This layer was downloaded from the Geoscience Australia data store as an ArcInfo grid, projected from Geodetic to UTM Zone 51 coordinates, imported into GoCAD as an x, y, z point set and interpolated using an initial 7500 metre triangulation in GoCAD. The data extent matches the polygon coordinate string given above.

Positional accuracy:

Positional accuracy varies with data sources and according to map scale of compilation, i.e. for legacy data compiled at 1:250 000 scale, positional accuracy is generally limited to around 250 metres. In most instances, it is impossible to predict positional accuracy with confidence.

Attribute accuracy:

Every effort has been made to ensure that features are attributed so that they are fit-for-use, and not necessarily compliant with any data dictionary version such as that constructed by Geoscience Australia. Geological themes have generally been constructed to comply with a version of the GA data dictionary.

Logical Consistency:

The test applied to consistency is fit-for-use, not necessarily compliant with a given standard. Every effort has been made to ensure that themes and layers within themes have been constructed to be logically consistent by following process standards.

Completeness:

This is a preliminary version of the model and is as such incomplete. Updates are planned in the coming year (06/07), the model will be improved and added to as part of the Paterson Project in this time.
